History and Background

As a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture student was about to graduate from the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources in 2017, he recognized a major challenge facing many young graduates in Malawi: the scarcity of jobs due to high unemployment rates. Rather than seeking non-existent employment opportunities, he saw a different path. He realized that the agricultural knowledge he gained at university could be transformed into economic opportunities, especially considering Malawi’s status as an agribusiness economy.

Motivated by this insight, he mobilized other young people and founded AgriTech Enterprise. The organization was established with the goal of turning classroom knowledge into practical ideas that support smallholder farmers. AgriTech focuses on providing customized input loan solutions, leveraging technology, and building the capacity of youth, smallholder farmers, and agribusiness SMEs.

AgriTech Enterprise has gained significant recognition internationally, being honoured by the US government under the Mandela Washington Fellowship flagship program for Young African Leaders.

Our Focus

Our approach revolves around providing smallholder farmers with the necessary tools, resources, and knowledge to significantly increase their crop yields and income. Through our Pre-establishment Finance Model, we supply inputs like soybean seeds on credit, which farmers repay either in kind or in cash. By focusing on building trust and engagement with farmers throughout the growing season, we have helped farmers more than double their harvests and income through precision farming to improve farmer productivity by using technology to optimize resource use, increase yields, and reduce costs. Our work ensures that farmers not only receive the inputs they need but also gain the skills and market access required to sustain their livelihoods.

We are tackling the challenges smallholder farmers face in accessing affordable credit and high-quality agricultural inputs in Malawi. By offering a comprehensive package of services, including input loans, training on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), and market access support, we aim to enhance the productivity and profitability of smallholder farmers.
